Solidago Farm Icelandic Sheep
We began raising sheep(crossbreds) in 1992. By 1994 we had decided on the perfect breed of sheep for us to raise- Icelandic sheep. We are constantly amazed at the hardiness and variety in the breed. Their innate hardiness, we believe, translates into less health and lambing problems and we have seen few problems as a result. They are renowned in this country for their long and colorful wool, but in native Iceland are raised as a meat animal, giving the breed great prospects as a quality dual purpose animal. They are of the Northern European sheep variety (along w/ Shetland, Romonav, Finnsheep, etc.) but are the largest of that class. They have short tails that do not require docking. Icelandic Sheep come both polled (hornless) and horned in both sexes. Solidago Farm is an active member of the Icelandic Sheep Breeders of North America(ISBONA) and upholds the current Icelandic Breed Standards. Our current breeding program selects for the following traits: - Size and conformation
